Measures Needs to Be Taken To Prevent the Use of Tobacco, Says Who Representative

Addressing an event in Colombo yesterday, in connection with World No Tobacco Day organized by the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA), WHO Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr.Razia Pendse emphasized about the necessity of implementing policy measures, to reduce demand for tobacco through taxation, creating smoke-free places and cessation support. “In terms of the supply side be legislation, be taxation, many of the articles and provisions of the framework invention of tobacco control have been implemented in Sri Lanka. This much more that needs to be done. However from the supply side much has been gained, what we need now is the demand side its how do we prevent people from picking up tobacco and for those who are using it how do we quit it”. Dr. Pendse noted. Speaking further Dr.Pendse also noted that Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) have become a huge crisis in Sri Lanka leading to over 80% deaths and disabilities in the country. She also noted that, Smoking tobacco is the most common cause of lung cancer, causing roughly 1.2 million lung cancer deaths every year. Besides, tobacco is also responsible for other serious respiratory and lung diseases such as tuberculosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).
