FAW control in Mahaweli areas

Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has launched a Fall Armyworm (FAW) eradication programme in Mahaweli areas.

The programme was implemented in Madatugama, Sigiriya, Kalundeva, Palugasdamana,and Galkiriyagama block areas.

Over 200 officials including from the Mahaweli Authority and students of the Pelwehera Agriculture School participated, while Mahaweli settlers also extended their contribution to the programme.

A door-to-door awareness campaign was conducted and maize crops affected by this pest were destroyed by burning. Mahaweli Agriculture Director Nevil Rajapaksa said about 3,000 acres in Mahaweli areas have been cultivated with maize, and most of it has been destroyed.
