PAFFREL to go to court on legality of dissolving parliament

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) issuing a statement on the Presidential proclamation dissolving the parliament, says that they will be filing a case at the Supreme Court to ascertain the correct legal position with regard to the dissolution.

PAFFREL states that, as a civil organization, they are deeply concerned about the prevailing situation due to the present uncertain political environment following the dismissal of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the dissolution of Parliament.

The Board of Directors and the officials of PAFFREL have considered the events that have taken place and of the opinion that the dissolution of parliament is contrary to the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, states the Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchie.

He has stated that they are also aware that there is much confusion amongst the general public about the correct legal interpretations and therefore, PAFFREL will be filing a case before the Supreme Court to ascertain the correct legal position.
