Kalunganga reservoir construction workers in protest

Workers attached to Kaluganga reservoir construction had been terminated from their work yesterday without any prior notice, they said. They had reported to work yesterday as usual when they were notified that the construction work was stopped by the Chinese construction company.

According to the workers, the Chinese company officials had said that they were short of funds for the project.

A protest against the Chinese company carried out by 150 workers was prevented by the police. According to the protesters, the company had terminated workers from time to time within last few days.

They said a plan is underway by the Chinese Company not to pay their ETF and to recruit Chinese workers instead of local workers.

The protesters said they had been working over three years. Around 600 workers were at the site.
