Illegal gem mining on either side of Walawa ganga from Ambalantota to Ebilipitiya has posed a threat to the health and sanitary conditions of the residents.
The gem pits left uncovered after mining gems have become breeding places for insects, mosquitoes and flies.
The stagnant water of the uncovered gem pits emanates a foul smell.
