United Republican Front leader MP Patali Champika Ranawaka told Parliament yesterday that as at 31 Dec., 2023, the Department of Inland Revenue had not been able to collect over one trillion rupees in unpaid taxes.

Presenting a report of the Parliament committee of Ways and Means, Ranawaka said that the outstanding amount was Rs 1,066 billion.

“The present situation, and the methods being applied are beneficial to tax evaders. The Department of Inland Revenue could open only around 500,000 new tax files last year. There is a proposal to open a tax file for everyone above the age of 18 years. If we continue at the present rate, it may take 32 more years to open tax files for all above the age of 18 years.”
