Five students from a leading boys’ school, in Jaffna, have contracted tuberculosis, according to health officials, who said they had taken several steps to contain a possible spread of the disease.

The officials are testing all students to determine if they have contracted tuberculosis. A mobile health camp was also held at the school earlier this week.

The spread of the disease at the school was uncovered when a 14-year-old student was taken to Jaffna Teaching Hospital after his weight dropped dramatically. It was revealed that he had contracted tuberculosis. Health officials tested his closest associates and found five other patients.

All students of the school have been asked to wear face masks. Those who had tested positive have been given medicine and parents have been instructed to follow safety protocol when they attend tuition classes and take part in public events.
