The documentary, which was just under 42 minutes in length and competed against other nominations from various nations, gave India its first victory in the prestigious category.
The hard work behind creating The Elephant Whisperers
For a number of reasons, India is proud of its victory. The Oscars’ performance by two women, Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves, carrying their awards in hand, was a watershed event for women in film. Before moving on with the film’s production, Kartiki spent more than five years conducting study on the issue. It was reportedly difficult to locate producers and big stars to support the idea in its early stages.
