SC order on Mahinda and Basil’s foreign travel ban

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today (22 March) issued an order lifting the foreign travel ban imposed against the former President Mahinda Rajapksa and former finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The Controller of Immigration has been notified of the same.

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksawere named as respondents in a fundamental rights petitions filed requesting an order to investigate the people responsible for the current economic crisis and the travel ban was imposed as a result of it.

Speaking before the court, President’s Counsel Navin Marapana, who appeared on behalf of the Respondents, informed the court that that Supreme Court has not extended the order restricting foreign travel after 07 October 2022 and therefore to issue an order notifyingController General of Immigration and Emigration of this.

Order was issued by a five-bench supreme court panel presided by the Chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
