The Government’s programme to distribute rice free to 2.9 million needy families will start from today. The Government made necessary arrangements to purchase 61,300 metric tons of paddy from the farmers in this Maha Season. Rs.10 billion was allocated for that under the first phase. The Finance Ministry decided that the purchase of paddy should be done by District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries rather than by the Paddy Marketing Board.
The paddy bought from the farmers in this manner is converted into rice and distributed free among low-income families. The Government will provide 10 kg of rice per family per month for two months.
