Plans to shift People’s Bank accounts due to strike action

Heads of Departments and Corporations in a letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe have informed that they would shift the People’s Bank accounts of their respective public institutions to another bank.

They have informed the President that they are compelled to remove the accounts from the People’s Bank as Wednesday’s strike action impacted their business activities, adding that such actions could hamper their work even in the future.

Many private businessmen too have verbally informed the President of their decisions to move their People’s Bank accounts to another bank.

Heads of Departments and Corporations have informed the President, who is also the Finance Minister, that the financial activities of their institutions were disturbed as the staff of the People’s Bank joined in the strike action on Wednesday. They have requested the Finance Ministry to shift their bank accounts from the People’s Bank, considering it as an urgent need.

The President yesterday instructed the Finance Ministry officials to pay special attention to the request of Heads of Government Corporations and Departments.
