One lane of the Kandy-Mahiyangana road which was closed near the 14th bend of the 18 Hairpin Bends (18 Wanguwa) due to an earthslip was opened for traffic yesterday. The police took measures to temporarily close the road from Saturday due to earth slips, a result of inclement weather.
Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena instructed the officials of the Road Development Authority to inspect the relevant area, remove the soil and stones and take necessary steps to reopen the road for traffic as soon as possible.
Accordingly, the Road Development Authority, which started the clearing work, has re-opened one lane of the road for traffic yesterday. Officials of the Road Development Authority are working to clear the other part of the road that is blocked and open it for traffic at the earliest.
