Minister of Foreign Affairs addresses 19 th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting

The 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) was held virtually (via zoon) in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday (9 March). Sri Lanka was represented by the Minister of Foreign affairs, Ali Sabry, PC.

Minister addressing the summit said that that the trade and investment component of the BIMSTEC countries should be re-invigorated in order to maintain stability, as the global economic growth trajectory is directed towards Asia.

Minister further stated that, countries need to improve their regional trade by strengthening cooperation efforts focusing on comparative benefits of each country.

Several key documents have been approved at this meeting including,

* Rules of Procedure for Core BIMSTEC Mechanisms, Sectoral BIMSTEC Mechanisms and BIMSTEC’s External Relations for submission to the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.

* Draft Host Country Agreement between India and the BIMSTEC Secretariat for establishing BIMSTEC Centre for Weather and Climate in India.
