Ground handling operations from Sri Lankan to AASL - Minister

Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said he requested the representatives of the airline agencies in Sri Lanka to reduce the prices of air tickets in proportion to the decrease in the price of the US Dollar according to which the prices of air tickets have already been reduced by about 20%.

“They agreed to further reduce the prices of air tickets in the future,” he said.

The Minister made these observations at a special discussion with the representatives of airline agencies operating from Sri Lanka. At the discussions, it was revealed that with the gradual decrease of the current economic crisis in the country, more favourable tendencies prevailed for an influx of a large number of tourists to Sri Lanka. In the coming days, about 07 new passenger airlines are scheduled to call the island.

The airline representatives, at these discussions, pointed out that already a traffic jam is experienced at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake due to delays in ground handling operations.

The Minister said that after a lengthy discussion, it had been decided to transfer the ground handling operations from SriLankan Airlines to Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited.

The representatives of the airlines expressed their gratitude to the Minister for taking fruitful measures to completely resolve issues about the supply of air-fuel and taking steps to provide fuel at a reasonable price.

Several officials including Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, Airport & Aviation Services Chairman Retd Major General G. A. Chandrasiri and representatives of airlines operating from Sri Lanka also attended the event.
