Five arrested over suspected underworld links in Kadugannawa

Kadugannawa Police have arrested five persons including three women suspected of being members of the underworld who were involved in large-scale drug trafficking under  the guise of running a business of selling coconuts by renting a house in Kandangama, Kadugannawa area.

When the relevant house was raided based on intelligence information received from the Police Special Task Force Kadugannawa Unit, police had taken into their custody 33 mobile phones, three vans, a motor cycle and valid revenue licenses and insurance certificates belonging to 09 other vehicles which were in the possession of the suspects. The police said that the suspects failed to explain how they had got these revenue licences and insurance certificates.

These suspects who distribute drugs using Ezy Cash had rented out the house for Rs. 25,000 and engaged in drug trafficking. The police suspect that the mobile phones which were in working condition had been used to distribute drugs via Ezy Cash. The police discovered 5340 milligrams of heroin and Rs. 62,800 in cash in the possession of the suspects. They also took into their custody five number plates and keys of three vehicles which were in the house.

One who was taken into custody on suspicion, has been revealed during investigations by the police to be a suspect in a robbery of Rs. 60 million. According to the police, an individual who had been injured in a shootout with the Police Special Task Force at Horana and had subsequently gone blind was also among the suspects. The case in connection with this is being heard at the Negombo Court as at present.

It was found that this gang had rented a house in Kambiadiya, Peradeniya and carried out drug dealing from there for a nine months and then four months ago left that place and come to a rented-out house in Kandagama, Kadugannawa.

Police said further that prior to renting out the house, they had paid an advance and asked the owner to construct a parapet wall around the premises and that they had been inside the house, quite often with the gate and door of the house locked.
