Fire destroys books and school equipment

A stock of books and school equipment worth Rs.100,000 which were to be distributed among school children had been completely destroyed in a fire that broke out at about 2 a.m. yesterday in an office at Tennekumbura, Kandy belonging to the founder of the Mahason Balakaya, Amith Weerasinghe. Although the Kandy Municipality Fire Brigade Unit and the Kandy Police had put in immense effort to douse the fire, they had not been able to save the books and school equipment. During Police investigations it had been revealed that these books and school equipment had been stored there to be distributed among low-income families. The reason for the fire has not been discovered and a special police investigation has been launched.
