Ex-MP Piyasena killed in accident

Former Ampara District Parliamentarian Podi Appuhamy Piyasena died in an accident that occurred opposite the Alayadivembu Public Cemetery on the Akkaraipattu-Pottuvil main road yesterday.

The accident took place when the motorbike ridden by the former Parliamentarian collided head on with a private bus traveling from Pottuvil to Polonnaruwa.

The former Parliamentarian who was seriously injured in the accident was rushed to the Akkaraipattu Hospital and later transferred to the Kalmunai North Hospital for further treatment. According to the hospital sources, he died a few minutes after being admitted to the ICU.

Police said that Piyasena was on his way to Alayadivembu to participate in a shramadana to clean a cemetery.

Born on April 03, 1961, Podi Hppuhami Piyasena entered Parliament by contesting the 2010 General election under the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) ticket.

Piyasena contested the 2015 General Election under United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and secured 4,901 votes. Akkaraipattu Police are investigating.
