Eggs for bakers at Rs.35 from India

The first consignment of eggs imported from India is expected to be handed over to the storage of Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation (STC) in Wattala today as the stock has received the green light from the Animal Production and Health Department.

A STC spokesman said that hoteliers and bakery owners can purchase their egg requirements at Rs.35 each from the STC stores in Wattala from 11 a.m. today. Meanwhile Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that there is a shortage of eggs in the country and the permission was granted to import eggs.

“We don’t expect to continue egg imports. Our production will increase within next few months”, he said.
