Did troops use rods and poles against protesters?

Social media reports on attacks being probed

By Norman Palihawadane

The Army says that it has launched an investigation to ascertain whether military personnel who had been deployed to assist the police in containing a protest by university students near the Colombo University last week used iron rods and wooden sticks to attack the protesters.

Army spokesman Brigadier Ravi Herath said that a probe was launched after photographs of military personnel on duty with iron rods and wooden sticks were circulated on social media.

He further stated that steps have been taken to identify the origin of the photograph.

The Army Spokesman said that the police riot control unit and the STF had been deployed at the front line to deal with protesters while the Army troops had been held in reserve. Brigadier Herath added that army troops did not engage with the protesters at the protest held on March 7.
