Delays in providing new electricity connections to be resolved soon – Minister Kanchana

Power and Energy Minister Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday (09 March) at the Ministerial Advisory Committee meeting held in the Parliament that steps will be taken to provide about 36,000 new connections that have been delayed, due to the debt issues in the Ceylon Electricity Board, within the next six weeks.

He pointed out that due to the existing financial problems, there was a shortage of equipment to provide new connections and that with the recent move to increase the electricity tariffs, the strengthening of the financial capacity of the board would enable new connections to be provided.

The Minister said this when the MPs raised issues in the committee that despite a large number of people having registered to get new connections, there is a huge delay in providing the connections.

Also, the minister said that a program to minimize the cost of the institutions under the ministry, including the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Petroleum Statutory Corporation, is currently underway.
