Cigarette container worth over Rs.6 Bn detained

The Sri Lanka Customs yesterday seized a container of foreign cigarettes with an estimated street value of more than Rs. 6 billion,  Customs Spokesman and Deputy Director (Legal) Sudatta Silva said. He said the goods in the container had been declared to the Customs as A4-sized papers and the container had arrived from Cambodia for re-export. He said the raid was conducted following information received by the Customs Revenue Investigation Unit. The officers after opening the container had found several packets of A4-sized paper and some empty cardboard boxes, and a large stock of foreign cigarettes.

Further investigation is being conducted by the Mobile Branch of the Customs Revenue Investigation unit. According to the Customs Spokesman this is one of the largest detections of its kind by the Sri Lanka customs.
