Australia assures Indian’s security: PM Modi raises over temples vandalism

New Delhi: In a joint conference with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday mentioned that the former has assured the safety of Indian diaspora in Australia.

This comes after a number of incident were reported of Hindu temples’ vandalisation allegedly by Khalistani elements in Australia.

PM Modi said, “I have seen reports of attacks on temples in Australia. I have conveyed this to PM Albanese and he has assured me that the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Australia is a priority for them.”

Addressing the conference with Austalia’s Anthony Albanese, PM Modi said such attacks on temples are a matter of regret and that it is natural that such news worries everyone in India.

From the month of January, Australia started witnessing vandalisation of Hindu temples at several prominent locations including Melbourne.

One of such incidents took place on January 12, which said to the first one of the series, in Australia’s Victoria state. Within a fortnight, vandals damaged the Swaminarayan temple in the Mill Park area of Melbourne.

Followed by that, the historic Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs, Victoria, was vandalised and the walls were defaced with anti-Hindu slogans. On January 23, the walls of ISKCON Temple in Albert Park, Melbourne was seen defaced with anti-India slogans of ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ and ‘Hindustan Murdabad.’

This followed more incidents where the temples were vandalised and their walls were defaced with anti-India slogans. There were allegedly pro-Khalistani elements behind these incident.

Such incidents had brought the safety of Indian diaspora in question. However, through an immediate response to India’s concern over the issue, the Australian authorities conveyed that they had initiated an investigation to look into the matter.
