Assam CM ups the ante against Madrasas, Shuts 600 till now

New Delhi: Aaasm’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vowed to keep going with his campaign against madrasas in the state, saying that people like to attend schools and universities for education more than madrasas.

While taking part in Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in poll-bound Karnataka, he claimed to have closed over 600 madrasas and turned them into general schools.

” I have shut down over 600 madrasas and I aspired to close all madrasas in the state because we do not want madrasas. We need schools, colleges and universities,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Addressing Vijay Sankalp Yatra in Belagavi, Himanta also targeted illegal immigration, saying illegal immigrants from Bangladesh a threat to Assamese civilization and culture.

In 2020, Assam’s government brought a contentious bill to shut all 3,000 registered and unregistered madrasas of the state.

Himanta also attacked the Left Front and Congress for allegedly promoting a “pro-Mughal” narrative to distort India’s glorifying past.
