AIIMS doctors perform life-saving heart surgery of fetus inside womb, change its shape

Delhi: Doctors frequently save patients from life-threatening circumstances, which explains why they have been accorded the position of God. In a recent case, a team of surgeons from the capital Delhi’s AIIMS Hospital performed a complicated surgery on the grape-shaped heart of a foetus growing in a woman’s womb and altered it in the mother’s womb itself.

Doctors at the hospital stated the 28-year-old expectant mother, who had three miscarriages, fainted when told of her unborn foetus’s cardiac problem. Yet, the mother wanted to prolong the pregnancy and agreed to let the specialists treat the foetal heart.

This complete treatment, known as balloon dilation in clogged heart valves, was carried out by a team of interventional cardiologists and doctors from the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at AIIMS. The foetus is guided via ultrasound during the surgery. A needle was placed into his heart, and then a balloon catheter was used to open the occluded valve.

According to one of the doctors involved, “The entire procedure had to be completed in record time. It was quite difficult. We finished in about a minute and a half.”

According to the doctor, “The foetal heart is predicted to develop more normally as a result of this remodelling treatment. The foetus and mother are both stable and being properly observed.”

Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister, stated, “I’d like to congratulate the physicians at @AIIMS NewDelhi on completing a remarkable surgery on a foetal grape-sized heart in 90 seconds. My best wishes for the baby and mother’s health.”
