Minuwangoda Police said that Chandu, who is said to be a close associate of underworld leader Heenatiyana Mahesh, who is hiding in Dubai, was shot dead on Thursday night.
Manikkuge Prabath Priyankara alias Chandu was shot and killed at the junction of Boragodawatta Ruwan Mawatha on Dagonna Road, Minuwangoda.
The Police said that the 30-year-old deceased was a permanent resident of Gemunu Mawatha, Peellawatte, Katunayake.According to Police, Chandu had been in remand prison on allegations of dealing in heroin and released on bail and had also been accused of shooting and injuring an officer of the Minuwangoda Police.
The Police said that Chandu had been riding a motorbike at about 9.50 p.m. on Thursday night when an unidentified gunman had arrived on another motorbike and shot him.
The deceased had abandoned the motorbike that he was riding and ran along the road when he had been shot again and killed. His body was found lying on the road.During investigations the Police have discovered that the deceased had been engaged in extorting money from people on behalf of underworld leader Heenatiyana Mahesh, who is hiding in Dubai, the Police said. Further investigations into this murder are being carried out by a team of officers including Acting Officer-In-Charge of the Minuwangoda Police Station, Inspector of Police Chandana Kulasuriya, Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Investigation Division Sub-Inspector of Police A.S.B. Medagama and Sub-Inspector of Police Jayawardena under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Jagath Rohana in charge of the Gampaha Division and Assistant Superintendent of Police Thusitha Kumara.
