Thai Cave Rescue: A tragic end to a miraculous rescue story with Duangpetch’s death in the UK

Duangpetch Promthep, one of the 12 boys rescued from a flooded Thai cave in 2018, died in the UK.

Duangpetch, moved to UK to attend college football academy under a scholarship died last Tuesday (14 February). He (17 years old) was found unconscious in his dorm room (at Leicestershire) on Sunday (12 February) and was taken to the hospital and was treated until Tuesday, there was no response from him.

The cause of his death has not been revealed but the Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Duangpetchhas said on a previous occasion after his rescue that ‘I don’t think I am a hero. real heroes are the navy seals.’ Before moving to the UK, he has written on social media stating that his dreams have finally come true as he gets to become a football student in England.

Hewas the captain of the Wild Boards football, a youth football team in Chiang province of Thai. 12 boys of the team was trapped by rapidly rising floods in while exploring the ThamLuang cave complex in June 2018. A massive international search and rescue operation was launched to rescue these boys, which lasted nine days. This story transfixed the entire world in 2018, and was even made into several movies such as the ‘Thirteen Lives’ and the 2021 documentary ‘The Rescue’.
