IND vs AUS 2023: Shreyas Iyer dropped, THIS star player likely to make debut

New Delhi: What would be major blow for India before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which is scheduled from February 9 in Nagpur. Indian middle order batter Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the first Test match against Australia. Iyer is likely to be fit buy the second Test, he has not fully recovered from his back injury.

Shreyas Iyer opt out from the three match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury and was asked to head to National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for his rehab.

Not fully recovered

It is learned that despite taking the injections, Iyer is still suffering from the back pain and as a result the NCA has advised the middle-order batsman to take at least two weeks’ rest.

“His injury hasn’t healed as expected and he will take two weeks at least to play cricket again. He will certainly not be available for the first Test and his availability for the second Test will be subject to his fitness report,” a source told a news organization.

Iyer is currently one of the best player in middle order for Team India in the red ball format. He was exceptional against spinners in the series win over Bangladesh in December 2022, and with spin once again set to be the focal point of the upcoming series against Australia, he was expected to play a key role.

Suryakumar Yadav can make his debut

In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, the road is now for Suryakumar Yadav, the no.1 T20 batter. The Mumbai Indians batter, is enjoying purple pitch in T20 format but he is yet to make his debut in white jersey. Suryakumar also expressed his desired to represent India in Test cricket.

“Obviously, everyone wants to play Test cricket. You start your cricket at domestic level, playing with red ball only, and I played for Mumbai. We all know how exciting the series would be, but at the same time, it’s about staying in the present and the focus is on how to give your best for tomorrow’s game, then we have full time to think about Tests,” Suryakumar said in the press conference ahead of 3rd T20I.
