Hindu Temple Attacks in Australia: India firmly rejects so-called Khalistan referendum

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said India has firmly rejected the referendum of so-called Khalistan groups while asking the Australian authorities to provide security to its diaspora.

“We conveyed our firm rejection of so called Khalistan referendum and politically motivated exercises. We have requested Australia to ensure safety of Indian community and do not allow use of Australian territory that will be detrimental to integrity of India, its national security.”

This comes after multiple attacks were made on the Hindu temples in Australia’s Melbourne allegedly made by the pro-Khalistani groups.

Reportedly, at least 3 Hindu temples were vandalised so far and their walls were defaced with anti-India and Anti-Hindu grafitti. It said that ‘the grafitti glorifies anti-Indian terrorists.’

“We strongly condemn such attacks by extremist elements and urge local authorities to punish perpetrators. We have been repeatedly taking up our concern with Australian authorities about action by elements including proscribed terrorist organisation,” said the spokesperson of the MEA, Arindam Bagchi.

Bagchi further mentioned that India has urged Australia to not allow such proscribed groups to use their land for actions which is “detrimental to integrity of India and its national security.”

On January 25, India had expressed expressed concern over “the frequency and impunity with which the vandals appear to be operating”, calling it alarming.

Through the High Commission of India, the nation conveyed that such attacks are mere attempts to sow hatred and division among the peaceful multi-faith and multi-cultural Indian-Australian community.
