Businessman abducted, pays Rs.7 Mn as ransom

Grandpass Police have commenced an investigation into a ransom taking incident, where an owner of a chain of building material stores had been abducted by a group, who pretended to be from the CID,  and then released him after obtaining Rs.7 million as ransom. The victim, M.S.M Mufithik (34), is the owner of several building material shops in Messenger Street, Colombo 12 and Kandy. The abduction had taken place last Friday (10) near a Church in Grandpass, when he was on his way to the mosque. The businessman had complained to the Grandpass Police on Wednesday. He had told the Police that he did not complain earlier due to the threats by the gang.

He had told the police that two unidentified men on a motorcycle blocked his path and got him into a van stating that they were from the CID. According to the businessman, three more people, including the driver, had been inside the van. They had blind folded him and taken him to a house, where he was threatened with a knife and a firearm. They had demanded Rs.10 million, but had later reduced the amount to Rs.7 million following negotiations.

The businessman had been released near the Dematagoda Railway Grounds after giving them the money with the help of a friend.
