The massive crackdown was launched on Thursday after the Chief Minister instructed the police to take firm actions against the violators.

Charing a video conference with senior officials of the police department, the CM appealed to people to extend support and cooperate with us in our endeavour to rid the State of the evil practice.

CM Sarma also informed that at least 4,004 cases have been registered in the cases of child marriage.

The National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) stated that percentage of women aged between 20 and 24 married before the legal age of 18 in the state was 31.8 per cent, compared to the national figure of 23.3 per cent. The data was of between 2019 and 2020.

Keeping that in mind, the Assam cabinet approved a drive against ending the illegal practice of child marriage.
