A 30-year-old man, named Mallesh who lives in Karnataka’s Maddur taluka shares his experience and said, “For the past four to five years, I have been searching for a suitable girl to marry. I have met girls whose proposals came to us for marriage. They (girls) said they will only marry boys from are from cities. Nobody wants to marry their daughter to a farmer or an agriculturist like me.”

In addition, he introduced a padayatra that will take place from Kempegowdana Doddi village in the Maddur taluka on February 23. The man will travel 105 kilometres on foot for over three days before arriving in Male Mahadeshwara Hills on February 25.

While having word with the media, the padayatra organiser K M Shivaprasad said that idea derived when a group of bachelor friends felt the urge to pray. “We started getting applications from single men from neighboring Mandya, Mysuru, Shivamogga and Chamrajanagara. We have received over 300 applications, but around 210 have confirmed participation in this padayatra.” Most of them are doing it for their “mental peace.”

Reason behind rejection

When asked why it’s so difficult for them to find brides, Shivaprasad responded that girls’ parents in Maddur believe that a farmer’s income might not be satisfying.

The organiser added, “It’s not just marriage, some men are seeking good fortune and a good harvest, while there are others who are seeking God’s help to resolve personal troubles.”
