Twenty five jogging tracks constructed last year - Prasanna

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranathunga said that the Government took measures to build 25 jogging tracks last year to promote physical fitness and good health among people across the country.

In 2021, the UDA identified suitable locations for the construction of 30 jogging tracks, and work on 25 of them was started.

The UDA completed the construction of all those tracks by December 25 last year spending Rs.1,263 million for this purpose.

The jogging tracks have been constructed in Kesbewa, Balangoda, Ampara, Rambukkana, Trincomalee, Balapitiya, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Matale, Lunawa, Ingiriya, Batticaloa, Kamburugamuwa, Nuwara Eliya, Yakkala, Jaffna, and Peduru Thuduwa.

The jogging track built near the Yakkala Wickramarachchi University is named ‘Vikum Uyana’. The amount spent for this project is Rs.65 million.

A car park that can accommodate about 30 vehicles has also been built in the area. The UDA built this project following the flood mitigation strategies.

Minister Ranatunga said that there is a proposal to establish an Ayurvedic Zone in this area. He further said that several discussions have been held with the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, the Minister has instructed the UDA to complete the construction work of the jogging track at Ragama, Peralanda without delay.

The construction work of the First and Second Phases of the Peralanda jogging track has already been completed at a cost of Rs.208 million. In the Third Phase, a children’s park, a restaurant, and an outdoor fitness centre will be constructed in the area.

Minister Ranatunga has instructed the officials to take steps to commission ongoing projects as soon as possible as such projects were started with the aim of producing healthy citizens for society.
