The demolition of a building considered to be a replica of the Sri Dalada Maligawa commenced yesterday at Pothuhera, Kurunegala. The demolition work got underway under the supervision of the owner of the building yesterday morning.
The Mahanayakes Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters wrote to the President that a fake Dalada Maligawa was being erected and large sums of money had been collected from people for the purpose. The prelates sought the presidential intervention to stop the project.
Former Minister Mervyn Silva visited the controversial building site on Saturday. He in a threatening manner he asked the owner of the building to change the design and begin demolition work immediately.
