Railway service will not become a burden to the public in future – Minister Dr. Gunawardena

Forty-four new station masters were recruited to the Railway service yesterday.

Transport Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, handed over appointment letters to them yesterday at a function held at the Transport Ministry.

A group of candidates was awarded these appointments following the results of an open competitive examination held in the year 2021. These appointments were offered with the special approval of the Public Service Commission.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister said the Railway Department will be run efficiently by managing its valuable assets without making an additional burden to the people in the future.

I believe that many big changes will be taking place in the Railway Department this year.

Although this is a great public service institution, it is running in spite of many serious crises.

Despite the existing difficulties, train drivers, controllers, and technical officers are providing yeoman service to the people continuously.

At the time I assumed this responsibility as a Minister, the monthly revenue of the Department was Rs.400 million. However, we took steps to obtain the Cabinet’s approval to revise the train fare following the fuel price hike.

The Railway Department has managed to earn more than Rs.1,000 million of monthly revenue now following this decision.

Everyone should work to run this institute without operational losses at this crucial juncture. We have no intention to privatize the railway service in any way. We look forward to taking strategic actions to provide effective and efficient service to the people.
