Police Sergeant, three wanted for robbing Rs. 8 Mn

Giranegama Police are conducting investigations to arrest a Police Sergeant and two others for robbing Rs. 8 million from a delivery   lorry near the Manamperi Lake in Andiyagala on Tuesday night (3).

The lorry belongs to a wholesale shop in Galewela which delivers essential food items to retail shops and it has been robbed at a fake police road block maintained by the said police officer and the three others who were impersonating the police officers, police said.

One of the suspects has been arrested by the police while fleeing after the robbery at Bulnewa area. He is said to be an illicit liquor seller of the Wariyapola area, police said.

It is said that the suspected police officer had supported this robbery on the request of this suspect. The police officer had close contacts with the arrested suspect when he was serving in the Wariyapola Police station some time ago, it has been revealed.

The wanted Police Sergeant Jagath Wijesiri is a resident of Vithikuliya, Nikaweratiya attached to the Chilaw police station. The other suspects wanted are residents of Ambakadawara Temple road and Katupotha road Wariyapola.

Police said that the four suspects had arrived in the Giranegama area from Wariyapola on two motorbikes to commit this crime. The suspects had planned this robbery after receiving information that this lorry carries a large amount of money collected from the retail shops every day.
