Monk teacher held for caning student in Beruwala

A teacher monk was taken into custody by the Beruwala Police yesterday (20) for inhumanely caning a Grade 7 student studying in a school in Beruwala who had to be hospitalized as a result.

The boy’s mother had complained to police that the teacher monk had punished one of the two students studying in the same class at school for having engaged in a fight and assaulted the students many time by hitting him on the shoulders, back and arms with a cane. Subsequent to an investigation carried out based on this complaint, and recording statements from the principal and another teacher of the school, this monk had been taken into custody by the Beruwala Police.

The student who was assaulted by the monk had got involved in a quarrel with another student in his class of similar age in the playground. Police said that it was revealed during investigations that as a result, the monk had assaulted this 12-year-old student.

Beruwala Police have recorded a statement from the suspect, the teacher monk and the police have admitted the student to the Nagoda Teaching Hospital, Kalutara where the boy is being treated.
