Forty seven workers stranded in Kuwait return

A group of 47 migrant workers, who had gone to Kuwait as domestic aides, returned to the country yesterday with the help of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait.

They had wanted to return due to various harassments they faced at the houses they worked at, illnesses and domestic problems at their homes in Sri Lanka. Among the returnees were 42 females and 5 males, and most of them were residents of Anuradhapura.

Some of them had come to the Sri Lankan Embassy after running away from the houses they worked. The Embassy with the intervention of the Foreign Employment Bureau had sent them to Sri Lanka after coordinating with the Kuwaiti authorities.

They arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on a SriLankan Airlines Flight from Muscat, Oman. About 1,300 more migrant workers, who departed as domestic workers, are waiting to return, Third Secretary of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait Janaka Samarasekara said in response to our inquiry. He said action would be taken to bring them home as soon as possible.
