Telangana’s Seperation

Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 when Hyderabad was designated as the state’s capital. In order to develop Amaravati as the state capital, the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government purchased over 33,000 acres of land from farmers in 2015.

The state government floated the idea of having three capitals—Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital—after Jagan Mohan Reddy assumed power in 2019. The state government passed legislation in this regard.

In November of last year, the controversial AP Decentralization and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act, 2020—which sought to establish three capitals for the state—was repealed by a bill that was passed by the Assembly under the Jagan Mohan Reddy administration.

Additionally, CM Reddy stated that the governor of the state will be based in Vizag, the headquarters. However, Amaravati will serve as the location for the legislature.
