Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha stated that even during dark days, when power transformers were destroyed and people were not allowed to switch on their lights at homes, the children of this country sat for the examinations successfully.
He said that in that era people were forced to remain at homes in the dark as they were not allowed to turn on the lights and some people are deliberately avoiding the subject and not talking about it openly today.
The Private Sector will print 55 per cent of the school text books and will provide 30 percent of the uniform materials required for this year, said Minister Premajayantha.
“The printing of the school textbooks should be completed before the end of March this year and paper materials needed will be provided to the State Printing Corporation (SPC) under the Indian Credit Line,” he said.
Forty percent of the textbook requirement will be fulfilled by the SPC.He said 70 per cent of the school uniform materials will be provided by China and the first consignment of that has already been received.
Minister Premajayantha was speaking to the media at Kandy on Saturday.
The Minister also pointed out that both the Government and Private Sector had to pay a total of Rs.2.3 billion as the Port and Customs duties in order to get the printing materials imported for the textbooks.”The Ministry has to provide uniforms for 4.2 million school students this year,” he further said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the power cuts during the ongoing G.C.E. A/L Examination, the Minister said that students have successfully sat for the exams overcoming all obstacles. Therefore, he said that he believed the students would face this exam confidently.
