Unauthorised constructions caused Akurana floods - Prof. Dissanayake

Unauthorized constructions beside the Mahaweli River, Pinga Oya and the Central Canal are the cause for the recent flood in the Kandy City and  more floods can be expected in the future unless steps are not taken to remove these constructions,Prof. Lalitha Dissanayake of the Peradeniya University’s Geography Department said.

She pointed out that the Pinga Oya spills several times a year inundating the Akurana town making the A-9 highway vulnerable for erosion from several places between Ambathenna and Akurana.

According to her, there are about 45 bridges between Ambathenna and Akurana and most of them are unauthorized ones. She said that there is a possibility of a great disaster unless the politicians and the public sector officers do not pay attention towards these constructions and take necessary action against them.
