Udaya dismisses govt. claim of not having funds for elections

By Eric Gamini Janapriya

It is a diabolical lie for a government that prints Rs 40 billion a day to claim that there are no funds for an election, leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) MP Udaya Gammanpila says.Addressing the media in Colombo, Gammanpila said that Election Commission had announced it would call for nominations in the first week of January.

MP Gammanpila said there were rumours that the government would delay elections after accepting nominations. Only the Election Commission could decide to postpone elections, he said. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the elections commission decided the situation in the country was not conducive to conducting elections.

“There is a court case on the local council election and the Commission has told the court that it is taking steps to hold local government elections. The case will be taken up on 18 January and if the Commission has not declared elections by then, the court will direct the Commission to hold the elections. The Commission wants to hold elections and there is nothing the government can do,” he said.
