LG polls petitioners to wait for EC Chief’s proclamation

The Supreme Court yesterday (16) decided to consider the writ petitions filed by a group of opposition parliamentarians seeking for an order to take immediate action to hold the Local Government election after the announcement of the Local Government election by the Elections Commission.

This was decided after President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena pointed out that the Elections Commission has stated that the announcement is expected to be issued in the last week of December.

The petitions were fixed for consideration on January 18. The petitions were taken up before the Supreme Court bench consisting of Justice Priyantha Jayawardena Justice Kumuduni Wickranamasinghe and Justice Achala Vengappuli.

Romesh De Silva PC and and Sanjeeva Jayawardena PC, who appeared for the petitioners, asked the court to set a date for considering this petition.

Sanjeeva Jayawardena PC pointed out that the Elections Commission has announced that the announcement regarding the holding of Local Government polls is expected to be issued in the last week of December.

.Supreme Court Justice Priyantha Jayawardena said that if the Election Commission makes such a declaration, then it is appropriate to consider this petition after the announcement is made . One of these petitions was filed by Samagi Jana Balawega General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Prof. G.L.Peiris, and SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, Lakshman Kiriella, M.A. Sumanthiran and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa presented one petition.

Elections Commission Chairman Nimal Punchihewa and its members, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena have been cited as respondents in these petitions
