Hooch Tragedy: Bihar CM refuses to pay compensation, says ‘We always appealed to stop drinking’

New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday came down heavily on the Opposition MLAs dismissing the latter’s demand to pay compensation to families of the deceased in the Bihar Hooch Tragedy.

The Chief Minister said, “No compensation will be given to people who died after drinking… We have been appealing – if you drink, you will die… those who talk in favour of drinking will not bring any good to you…”

CM Kumar stated that people in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have also died after consuming spurious alcohol but no one is talking about it.

He said there is a number of tragedies such as Morbi Bridge Collapse in Gujarat that affected so many lives but that was in news just for a day.

Meanwhile in the Assembly today, the agitated Opposition created a ruckus by carrying chairs and raising slogans during the speech of Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav.

Alcohol Ban in 2016

The Assmebly rocked with anti-government slogans, demanding for the government to take responsibility of the incident.

In 2016, the Nitish Kumar-led government banned selling and consuming alcohol. Those who died complained about uneasiness, nausea, breathlessness, stomach pain and blurry vision, according to media reports.

Hooch Tragedy 

By this morning, the death toll due to consumption of spurious alcohol mounted to 53 while many others are facing same symptoms in the Chapra area of Bihar’s Saran district.

The alarming rate of deaths have sent shockwaves to the nation, resulting counter charges of state govenrment and Opposition in the state Assembly.
