Downtrodden people should be provided with more relief - Opposition Leader

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that the Government should not put more and more economic burden on people at this crucial moment when a large percentage of people are facing untold hardships due to the escalating prices of essential consumer items.

He was participating in a ceremony organised by Piliyandala Dharmaraja Vidyalaya to coincide with the donation of a bus under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Sakwala Education Programme.

He also said that in addition to the skyrocketed prices of food items, the Government is planning to increase the electricity tariff and it will also another burden on less-privileged people such as labourers, daily paid workers and unemployed youth among others.

“Increasing electricity tariff will definitely affect small, medium scale and even large scale industrialists who are the back bone in the economy and the export sector,” he said.

The Opposition Leader said that if industrialists close down their ventures due to the high electricity tariff, thousands of workers will lose their jobs.

He also said that as a result of the country’s deteriorating economic policies and lack of farsighted policies of Government politicians, thousands of our youth are leaving the country for employment in foreign countries.
