PM Modi, Pradhan pays tribute to Abul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and other leaders on Friday paid tributes to India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his 134th birth anniversary.

Remembering Azad on his birth anniversary, PM Modi wrote Azad is widely admired for his scholarly nature and intellectual prowess. “He remained at the forefront of our freedom movement, working closely with other leading lights. He was also passionate about education.”

Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan paid homage to Azad and wrote “He will be remembered for his invaluable role in India’s freedom struggle and for his contributions towards our education sector.”

Why is National Education Day celebrated?

National Education Day is celebrated annually on November 11 on the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

Born on November 18, 1888, Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad was an Indian independence activist, writer and a senior leader of Indian National Congress.

He served as the education minister from August 15, 1947 till February 2, 1958, and passed away in Delhi on February 22, 1958.
