Over 2,800 megawatts of renewable energy for grid by 2026 - Minister

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that another 2,800 megawatts of renewable energy will be added to the national electricity system by 2026.

The minister stated this while addressing the monthly progress review meeting of the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Sustainable Energy Authority. The progress review meeting, which chaired by of Minister Wijesekera, was held yesterday evening.

“About 2,800 megawatts more renewable energy will be added to the national grid under the existing transmission and generation infrastructure plan by 2026. Work will be expedited to complete the projects that have been started. Infrastructure development projects for new projects will be started by the coming December,” he said.

Infrastructure development projects relating to the electricity generation sector especially in the tourism zones have been planned to implement soon, he said.

At the meeting it has discussed the ways to provide continuous electricity supply targeting industrial zones and tourist zones.

State Ministers D.V. Chanaka and Indika Anuruddha also participated in this event.
