Eighty one students under rehab for drug abuse - Minister

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha revealed in Parliament yesterday that 81 school children have been directed to rehabilitation due to drug addiction within January 2022 up to now.

Thus, the government will take immediate steps to present the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) bill January 2023, the Education Minister observed.

Minister Premajayantha pointed out that within the said school children, three are below 14 years while the rest are between 15 and 19.

Minister Premajayantha made these observations responding to a question raised by MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera. As requested by the Education Minister, MP Rathana Thera requested the Speaker to appoint a Parliament Select Committee to probe the matter.

The Committee is to submit its report within three months.

Minister Premajayantha noted that the prevailing laws are not sufficient to act against certain dangerous drugs such as ICE.
