Discussion with Beedi sellers on implementing the Budget 2023 plan

Excise Commissioner General M. J. Gunasiri said that the department will hold a special discussion and seminar next week with Beedi sellers on implementing the plan on the proposal made in Budget 2023 to charge a new Rs.2 tax for a Beedi.

The Excise Commissioner General who said that at present, 550 Beedi manufacturers in the country are registered with his department, also mentioned that some of them are no longer engaged in that industry. He said that however, he hopes to summon all of them to the discussions to be held next week.

He also said that all relevant parties including the tax policy advisors of the Ministry of Finance, senior officers of his department and the officers of the All-Ceylon Beedi Manufacturers Association will be called to discuss the matter of charging a new tax.
