Bourse shows mixed signals amidst thin volumes yesterday

The Colombo bourse witnessed a gain during the first hour of trading session and after that sharply dropped amidst trading with thin volumes to close the day with negative sentiments. Thus, All-Share Price Index dropped by 52.3 points (-0.7%) to close at 8,034.8 for the day whilst S&P SL20 Index also dropped by 4.0 points (-0.2%) to close at 2,460.2.

Ceylinco Insurance, LOLC Holdings, John Keells Holdings, Central Finance and Hatton National Bank remained as the top negative contributors to the ASPI during the day. Further, the broader market’s total turnover stood at Rs. 976.7 mn against the 12-month average daily turnover of Rs. 3,759.2 mn, whilst the volume traded for the day was 50,055.3k against the 12-month average daily volume of 192,036.8k.176,453.4k. BanksCapital Goods, Banks and Diversified Financials sector mostly contributed to yesterday’s turnover.

The top turnover generators for yesterday were Sri Lanka Telecom Rs.140.8 mn (+8.3%), John Keells Holdings Rs.105.6 mn (-1.1%), Lanka IOC Rs.94.8 mn (+2.8%), Expolanka Holdings Rs.59.1 mn (+0.2%) and Browns Investments Rs.45.6 mn (-1.9%). Foreigners recorded a net inflow of Rs.56.9 bn yesterday. Foreign purchases stood at Rs. 60.8 mn whilst total foreign

sales amounted to Rs.3.9 bn. Top foreign buying counters were HUNA LKR.36.0

mn, HHL LKR. 5.7 mn, SPEN LKR. 3.3 mn, LIOC LKR. 2.6 mn, MELS LKR. 2.6 mn, CIC LKR. 2.5 mn, whilst top foreign selling counters were BFL LKR. (3.5) mn, BBH LKR. (0.3) mn, KZOO LKR. (0.0) mn, COMD LKR. (0.0) mn, DIMO LKR. (0.0) mn and PAP LKR. (0.0) mn. Further, off-board transactions were witnessed in John Keells Holdings (Rs.69.9 mn) and Hunas Falls Hotels (Rs.36.0 mn) yesterday.

Additionally, Nation Lanka Finance, Laugfs Gas (Non-Voting), SMB Leasing (Voting), Amana Takaful Life and Amana Takaful were the top price gainers yesterday whilst Serendib Hotels, Royal Palms Beach Hotels, Renuka Foods (Non- Voting), Mercantile Shipping and Ceylon Tea Services were the top price losers. Further, Browns Investments, Serendib Hotels, Prime Land Residencies, Sri Lanka Telecom and LOLC Finance were among the most actively traded stocks yesterday.
