Accomplice of actress arrested over cheating in gem mine

An accomplice of teledrama actress Manjula Kumari Perera, who had impersonated as a Senior Superintendent of  Police in Vavuniya District has been arrested by Laggala Police yesterday on suspicion of cheating a blue sapphire stone.

The suspect, M.D.M. Gunarathne Bandara, a resident of Wariyapola area in Minuwangate, has appeared for police roles in several TV dramas.

Police further stated that a sapphire stone allegedly stolen from a mine and a car owned by this person were taken into police custody.

Actress Manjula Kumari Perera has signed a contract with a woman in the Laggala Dewaladeniya area for mining. The suspect has been sent by the teledrama actress to take care of the mine. He had posed off as the SSP in Vavuniya for several months.

A woman who signed an agreement with the actress has complained to the Laggala Police and said that this person was trying to fraudulently take away a sapphire found in the mine and he is also threatening her by saying that he is an SSP.

Accordingly, Laggala Police visited the area and took the suspect,the blue sapphire stone and the car into police custody.

The suspect has told the Police that he was assigned to look after the mine due to his relationship with the husband of the tele-drama actress.However, the Police says that this person had been brought to the Police earlier due to a dispute in a mine and he has misled police by stating that he was the Senior Superintendent of Police for Vavuniya at that time.

Investigations have revealed that this suspect had previously impersonated as a police officer and there are complaints and court cases against him in the Wariyapola and Kurunegala Police stations in connection with various crimes.

The police say that this person has played the character of a police officer in several teledramas along with actress Manjula Kumari.
